This Donut Recipe Will Make You a Breakfast Hero

Updated: Jun 28, 2020

Yes, there are donut shops everywhere. Yes, donuts are super cheap to buy. Yes, it's easier to send your husband to fetch them while you're still in bed on Sunday morning. I get it. But guess what? YOU'LL get it after you make these donuts-once. Ever wondered what a homemade thick and warm freshly frosted donut would taste like in the comfort of your pajamas? Here's the recipe, sorry not sorry.

Donuts @ Home: a Food Hack Recipe!

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of buttermilk biscuits (really any type EXCEPT flaky layers)

  • cooking oil for frying (I used vegetable oil)

  • 1 Cup powdered sugar

  • 1/3 teaspoon vanilla

  • 3 Tablespoons milk

  • 2 Tablespoons butter

  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 Cup granulated sugar

With a can of 8 biscuits, this recipe will make 8 glazed donuts and

8 cinnamon sugar donut holes.

Instructions:

  1. Warm oil in a pot on the stove about 3 inches deep. I set mine on medium low. You want the donuts to become golden brown slowly, so the inside cooks before the outside burns. There may be some trial and error with the first donut. Then you'll be a pro.

  2. Cut a hole out of each biscuit setting the "holes" aside for now. We will make the donuts first, then fry all the holes at once in the end.

  3. While the oil is heating-let's make the glaze. In a microwave safe bowl, warm the butter in the microwave until melted. Then add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk stirring until smooth. Set aside. Now let's also make the cinnamon sugar topping. In a different small bowl, combine granulated sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

  4. Once the oil is about 350 degrees, drop in 2 donuts. The donuts should take about a minute per side to reach a nice golden brown (pictured) if it reaches golden brown quicker than that-turn down the heat. You want to make sure the inside gets cooked as well. Better for the donuts to take 2 minutes per side than to get burned and hard. After you have fried the donuts, dump all the donut holes in together. These should take about 2 minutes total. Make sure to turn them the best you can.

  5. After letting the donuts drain excess oil on a cooling rack or paper towel if you don't have a cooling rack, drop donuts into the glaze on each side. Don't worry about covering all edges, just a nice layer is great. I used a tong to do this, and then placed the donuts back on the cooling rack.

  6. Toss the donuts in the cinnamon sugar bowl to coat nicely.

  7. Enjoyyy and don't forget the coffee!
