Sliding Barn Door from Build to Install for less than $75

Writer: Grace WestGrace West

Is cost stopping you from putting in a sliding barn door? Well, my friends, I am ECSTATIC to tell you, I did this entire project for less than $75! You might be thinking, how in the world did you accomplish that when just a barn door from the local hardware store costs over $200?? AND that doesn't even include the hardware.

I used my existing door.

Oh yeah, I converted my hollow core builder grade door into a hanging door. If you want to find out how I did it-all the details are all here.

In our master bathroom we had a real space issue. The door to the bathroom actually hit the toilet room door when they were both open. I knew that converting one door to a sliding door would solve this immediately. But when I saw how much barn doors cost, I wondered if anyone had ever tried to use their existing door. I thought-what have I got to lose?

The first thing I did was to take the door down. It was really easy, I just used m drill to remove the screws in each hinge. The hollow core door was very light and easy to move and carry on my own.

After the door and hinges were removed, it left holes in the door jamb. I used wood filler to fill these holes and after it cured I sanded it down and painted it to match the door. No problem. I did the same thing on the other side with the latch hole. I just used a piece of paper towel wadded up to stuff into the hole and then wood filler and paint.

The door had holes as well, some of which I filled, and some of which I left because I knew the would be covered up anyway. I used 2x2 lumber to edge out the door and frame it. A sliding door needs to be just a bit bigger than the door hole/opening so this was my solution. By adding the 2x2s on all sides I increased my door measurement by 3 inches on both the height and width.

To attach the 2x2s, I used wood glue and star head screws (my favorite).

With the door framed to increase the size, I was ready to add the handle and hanging hardware. I ordered both off amazon and I will have them linked below. I ended up mounting the handle onto a piece of scrap wood to cover the big hole left from the door knob.

I also love how this door still matches the rest of the doors in my home. But, a little cooler.

I ordered the hanging hardware from Amazon and just followed the instructions provided to install. The instructions detailed every single thing, including how far the hardware needs to be from the wall. Because I still had my door trim, I decided to add a header board to make the installation easier by basically creating a flat surface if that makes sense (the header and the trim are the same thickness).

And there you have it. My space solution, and isn't she pretty?? All for $75.
